1793 S.13 Liberty Cap Large cent, PCGS VG10 OGH, I grade Fine

I love this coin. OK, I love all 1793 Liberty Cap cents…it’s my favorite US coin design…but I love this one more than most. The design is so elegant…simple yet refined. The beaded border frames Joseph Wright’s delicate work perfectly. A mere 11,056 of these were minted in September 1793, and paid out to the Treasurer of the Mint shortly before closing due to yellow fever on the 18th. By that time, Wright had been dead almost a week, thanks to the fever. Perhaps he never even saw the coins struck. There are only a few hundred of these remaining, and quality examples are really tough to come by. Even if you want to spend $100k or more on one, opportunity is an issue. For a small fraction of that price, finding a well-detailed, largely problem-free, very pleasing example like we have here, presents a significant challenge. This also is a rarity on a different level…a 93 Cap in an Old, Green label Holder (OGH). Not many of those to choose from! A very minor planchet fissure on the obverse is really the only distraction, and it is a truly minor one, especially given all the positives. The color is lovely, the surfaces are generally smooth, and the details belie the grade assigned. One of the stoppers in the complete US Type set!
