Civil War Sutler Token, KY-21-10c, NGC MS64 BN, tough state (Kentucky)

From the Richard W. Irons collection of Civil War Sutler Tokens.  Rick is best known to many of you as the editor of the Second edition of Keith Davignon’s Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Halves, published in 2010.  He didn’t stop there though.  It seems that another of his collecting interests, Civil War Sutler Tokens, was then without an up-to-date reference, so he took on that project as well.  In 2014, he published the fully revised, completely updated second edition of David Schenkman’s Civil War Sutler Tokens and Cardboard Scrip.  (As a side note, both of these books are available here on my website, see the Numismatic Literature section).  The time has come for Rick to sell most of his collection, and I am proud to have been asked to help!  This piece is a tough one, rated R9, and from one of the more difficult states.  Most of these were fairly well used and abused.  This particular variety is one of the easier finds in Unc and with some red!  The quality and eye appeal are excellent.  I’ll have many more of these on display at the FUN show in early January, table #912, and Rick has even more on his website, www.SutlerToken.com
